As the Wheel of the Year turns and the seasons change, so too do we continue to grow and evolve- at least that’s what I strive to do. From last month’s theme of self-love, April brings the message of releasing negative patterns which prevent me from realizing my true potential with the upright 8 of Swords.

A person is depicted blindfolded, bound, and surrounded by 8 swords. At first glance, it appears to trap them in place, symbolic of the limiting beliefs and thoughts which prevent us from moving forward. Upon closer inspection the ropes appear to be loose, suggesting that this person can escape their predicament by letting go of these negative patterns by establishing a more empowered mindset. The pool of water at their feet additionally indicate that their intuition might better see what their eyes cannot.

I’ve been growing my hair again after cutting it short in 2022. Whenever I decide to have long hair, many people tell how they prefer my hair shorter. While I try not to internalize this messaging, it can be challenging to hear my own voice when such external feedback is so loud. On the one hand, my physical appearance and presentation are important to me to attract my target audience of typically cis-presenting gay men. There are times when my performance of gender will cater to their expectations of classic masculinity, and I admittedly enjoy those situations. But on the other hand, I am a non-binary person who has never conformed to social expectations and rules of gender. I feel the most authentically myself and happiest when I am not trying to mold myself to the desires of others.

That was the lesson I quickly learned in 2022 when I went from having long hair to short hair. I did so because I thought it would gain me more favor from people, and it did for a time. But what I gave up in return was a piece of my identity I didn’t realize then was so important to me. It was not just my physical appearance, it was symbolic of my choice, my inner peace, and my power. And let us not forget that hair has historically held great cultural value throughout human history, especially before the Christianization of the world. So with April’s theme of navigating our actions, which are shaped by our thoughts and influenced by our emotions, I am encouraged to find the balance between opposites and adapt to situations so I can better realize my potential.
